15-Minute Chicken Tikka Masala Split Plate

Fridge shortcut. 15 min end-to-end. One shared cook, two age-appropriate portions. Adult: 2 servings + 2 rotis + Kashmiri chili (540 cal / 50g protein). Kid: 1.5 servings + 1.5 rotis, deconstructed, mild (405 cal / 38g protein). Split at the pot BEFORE the chili — the mild kid meal never touches the adult heat.

Make this when

Soccer ended at 6:45. Dinner needs to be on the table at 7. No meal prep, no delivery, no separate kid meal. Refrigerated chicken tikka masala pouches + frozen rumali rotis + one adult-only spice upgrade = a full split-plate dinner in 15 minutes. The pouches warm in hot water while the rotis thaw; you split the kids' portions BEFORE stirring in Kashmiri chili so the mild kid meal never touches the adult heat. This is the emergency dinner the freezer + fridge are stocked FOR.

Method

Split point

AT THE POT, BEFORE THE CHILI. All 7 servings warm together in the saucepan; remove 3 servings for the kids' plates BEFORE stirring the 1 tsp Kashmiri chili into the remaining 4 adult servings. The mild kid meal never touches the adult heat.

2 adult plates (2 tikka servings + 2 rotis each + Kashmiri finish) / 2 kid deconstructed trays (1.5 tikka servings + 1.5 rotis each, mild, chicken + gravy + rotis in separate compartments).

Shared base

Cook once — this part works for everyone.

  1. 1
    WARM THE POUCHES

Place the 2 sealed tikka masala pouches in a bowl of hot tap water. Let sit 5-7 min. THE PHYSICAL PACKAGE TAKES PRIORITY if the directions differ from this general guidance.

  2. 2
    EMPTY INTO A SAUCEPAN

Discard the warming water. Cut open the pouches and empty the tikka masala into a saucepan.

  3. 3
    PAN-HEAT COVERED

Cover the saucepan and heat on medium-low for about 5 min, stirring once, until the chicken and sauce are steaming hot throughout.

  4. 4
    WARM THE ROTIS

While the tikka heats, warm the frozen rotis one at a time in a dry pan 10-15 sec per side (or per the package). Stack under a clean towel to hold soft.

  5. 5

SPLIT POINT — REMOVE KID PORTIONS: Before adding any Kashmiri chili, spoon out 3 total tikka masala servings for the kids' plates (1.5 servings per kid). This is the non-negotiable step — spice doesn't come back out once it's in.

Adult — 2 Tikka Servings + 2 Rotis + Kashmiri Chili

  1. 6
    STIR IN KASHMIRI CHILI

With the 4 adult servings still in the pan, sprinkle 1 tsp Kashmiri chili powder over the surface and stir to distribute. Heat 30-60 sec covered to bloom the spice.

  2. 7
    PLATE THE ADULT

Spoon 2 tikka masala servings onto or next to 2 warmed rumali rotis. Serve immediately. 540 cal / 50g protein.

Kid — 1.5 Tikka Servings + 1.5 Rotis, Deconstructed, Mild

  1. 6
    PLATE THE KID

Portion 1.5 tikka masala servings into a compartment tray — chicken pieces in one section, extra gravy in a separate ramekin or well, 1.5 warmed rotis torn or halved on the side. Kid controls dipping, assembly, and bite size.

  2. 7
    ADJUST TO KID APPETITE

If the kid finishes the 1.5 servings and wants more, dip into the adult pot BEFORE it's been stirred with Kashmiri — hard to do after the split, so watch the split-timing carefully. Otherwise, extend with an extra plain roti (240 cal / 6g protein per whole roti).

Three keys to success

  1. 1SPLIT BEFORE THE CHILI. Remove 3 servings (1.5 per kid) BEFORE stirring 1 tsp Kashmiri chili into the adult portion. Once the chili is in, the kids' portions are gone.
  2. 2WARM POUCHES IN HOT WATER FIRST. 5-7 min in hot water while the rotis thaw. Then empty into a saucepan for the 5-min pan finish. THE PHYSICAL PACKAGE TAKES PRIORITY if directions differ.
  3. 3KID PLATE = DECONSTRUCTED. Chicken + gravy + rotis in separate compartments. Kids reject the mixed-composition plate — they want components they control.

Storage and nutrition

Storage: Store any leftover curry and rotis SEPARATELY in sealed containers. Refrigerate promptly. FOLLOW THE PHYSICAL PACKAGE for storage window — if Sukhi's or Vadilal give a shorter guidance than 3-4 days, use their number.

Reheat: Reheat curry covered on the stovetop to 165°F, or microwave 60-90 sec (covered) with a splash of water if the sauce has tightened. Warm rotis separately in a dry pan 10-15 sec per side — don't microwave rotis in a stack (steam makes them rubbery).

Lasts: Curry: 3-4 days fridge (or per the Sukhi's package). Rotis: 2-3 days fridge, or freeze back for longer. Assemble immediately before eating for best texture.
