Sunshine Snack Box

Snack Box Series Ep. 9 — a warm-color palette snack box named for the yolk-yellow / strawberry-red / cheese-cream / peanut-tan color story. Boiled egg + dried strawberries + light cheese wedge + salted peanuts. About 280 cal / 16g protein per box. Make four for 2 kids × 2 days.

Make this when

You want a make-four-at-once no-cook snack box that lasts 2 kids × 2 days AND you want a warm-color palette (yolk-yellow + strawberry-red + cheese-cream + peanut-tan) that reads sunny on the fridge shelf. Ep. 9 of the Split Plate Snack Box series — the name is the visual identity, not a flavor axis. Boiled egg does the protein-anchor work; dried strawberries + cheese wedge + salted peanuts round out the four compartments. Ep. 8 Deli Dill returned to shelf-stable proteins; Ep. 9 continues that pattern with boiled egg (cook once, chill, hold up to a week).

Flavor target

First compartment: 1 sliced hard-boiled egg per box (halved or age-appropriate pieces) — the protein anchor at ~6g protein. Second: 1 portion (~60 cal) dried strawberries per box — the sweet + warm-red color anchor. Third: 1 wrapped light cheese wedge (Laughing Cow-style or similar) per box — creamy calcium + kid-familiar. Fourth: 0.75 oz salted peanuts per box — the crunch + fat + protein bump AND Ep. 9's flavor gamble (peanuts polarize kids). Reads warm-color sunshine palette scaled for kids.

FOUR-BOX BATCH (recommended)

Method

  1. 1
    SET UP

Set out four divided snack boxes (4-compartment Bento-style — same format as Snack Box Series Ep. 1-8). Have peeled hard-boiled eggs ready (make ahead — 4 large eggs boiled, ice-bathed, peeled — 10 min active + 12 min cook / cool). Ep. 9 continues the shelf-stable-protein pattern from Ep. 8: cook once, chill, hold.

  2. 2
    SLICE EGGS

Slice each peeled hard-boiled egg in half (over-4s) or into age-appropriate small pieces (under-4s). Yolk-yellow is the warm-color anchor for the whole box; keep the yolk exposed on top for the visual identity. 4 eggs across 4 boxes = 1 egg per box.

  3. 3
    ADD EGGS

Place 1 sliced egg into the first compartment of each box, yolk-side up when possible for the sunshine identity moment. Boiled egg is the ~6g protein anchor per box.

  4. 4
    STRAWBERRIES

Add one 60-calorie portion of dried strawberries to the second compartment of each box. Dried strawberries are the sweet-hit + warm-red color anchor. Any brand of freeze-dried or dehydrated strawberries flexes — measure by label serving, not by handful, since portion size drives ~60 cal / portion.

  5. 5
    CHEESE WEDGE

Add 1 wrapped light cheese wedge to the third compartment of each box (Laughing Cow-style — creamy spreadable wedge, ~35-50 cal / 2-3g protein). Cheese-cream color completes the warm palette. Wrapped wedge stays clean in the box; kids can help unwrap at snack time.

  6. 6
    PEANUTS

Weigh 0.75 oz salted peanuts into the final compartment of each box (about a small handful — measure by weight, not by feel). Peanut-tan color completes the sunshine palette + adds crunch, fat, and a bit more protein. FOR KIDS UNDER 4 — omit whole peanuts entirely; sub a soft alternative (soft berries, banana slices, or diced apple). Over 4 with good chewing = whole peanuts only if supervised.

  7. 7
    LID + CHILL

Snap lids on and refrigerate promptly. Serve within 2 days. Dried strawberries + peanuts may soften slightly in the sealed box's humidity — add peanuts closer to serving if maximum crunch matters (they hold OK for 2 days but the first-day crunch is best).

Adult plate

Adult

Adult-friendly batch too — steal a box from the meal-prep stack. ~280 cal / 16g protein reads as a clean parent snack. Whole peanuts are fine for adults; the kid safety rules below don't apply.

Kid plate

Kid

SAFETY: Whole peanuts are choking-hazard textures for young kids. Under 4 = omit whole peanuts entirely and sub a soft alternative (soft berries, banana slices, or diced apple), and slice the boiled egg into small pieces (halved is too big for young kids). Over 4 with confident chewing + supervision = whole peanuts are OK. Per CDC + AAP choking-prevention guidance. Kids can help place components — turns snack prep into low-pressure participation.

Three keys to success

  1. 1PEANUT ALLERGY = SCHOOL-FORBIDDEN #1. Do NOT label this box school-safe. Peanuts are the most-restricted allergen in schools and childcare — check the specific school's nut/peanut policy BEFORE packing outside the home. This is Ep. 9's headline rule.
  2. 2Whole peanuts = choking hazard for kids under 4. Omit entirely and use a soft alternative (soft berries, banana slices, or diced apple). Over 4 with good chewing = whole peanuts OK with supervision. Per CDC + AAP choking-prevention guidance.
  3. 3Boiled egg = the protein anchor. Slice halved for over-4s, into small pieces for under-4s. Yolk-side up when placing = the sunshine identity moment.

Storage and nutrition

Storage: Assemble the 4 boxes in one 15-minute pass (10 min if eggs already boiled). Refrigerate immediately — boiled egg + cheese wedge both need cold storage. Assembled boxes hold up to 2 days. Cook the eggs up to 1 week ahead (peeled, chilled) to shorten assembly time. For lunchboxes, pack with an ice pack.

Reheat: Don't reheat the assembled box (egg gets rubbery when microwaved, cheese wedge splits). Serve chilled by default — that's the whole snack-box format.

Lasts: 2 days max in the fridge — peanut crunch is the first thing to degrade after that (softens from sealed-box humidity), followed by dried strawberries clumping. Boiled egg + cheese wedge hold fine for the 2-day window. Cheese wedges can sweat inside their foil wrapper in cold-condensation — wipe with a paper towel at serve time.

Brands I use

Hard-boiled eggs (any brand of large eggs)
1 large egg per box (4 eggs total). Boil 10-12 min, ice-bath, peel, chill.
The sunshine-yellow yolk is the color-identity anchor. Cook once, hold up to 1 week peeled + refrigerated. Not sponsored.
Dried strawberries (any brand)
1 portion (~60 cal) per box, 4 portions total. Freeze-dried or dehydrated both work.
The sweet-hit + warm-red color anchor. Freeze-dried = crunchier and won't soften in the sealed box; dehydrated = softer and stickier. Any brand flexes — measure by label serving. Not sponsored.
Light cheese wedges (Laughing Cow or similar)
1 wrapped wedge per box, 4 wedges total. Laughing Cow Light shown; brand-neutral by default.
Creamy-cream color completes the warm palette + calcium + kid-familiar. Wrapped stays clean in the box; kids can help unwrap. Any Laughing Cow-style spreadable wedge flexes. Not sponsored.
Salted peanuts (any brand)
0.75 oz per box, 3 oz total. Standard roasted-salted peanuts.
Peanut-tan color completes the sunshine palette + crunch + fat + protein bump. Whole peanuts = choking hazard for kids under 4; use a soft alternative for that age group. Not sponsored. PEANUT ALLERGY = SCHOOL-FORBIDDEN #1 — never label this box school-safe.
