Deli Dill Snack Box
Snack Box Series Ep. 8 — deli-plate energy at snack-box scale. 2.5 oz deli turkey + cubed Colby Jack + petite dill pickles + pretzel crisps. About 250 cal / 20g protein per box. Ep. 8 returns to shelf-stable proteins after Ep. 7's first-hot-protein Tropical Chicken. Make four at once for 2 kids × 2 days.
You want the classic deli-plate flavor profile (turkey + cheese + pickles + pretzels) in a make-four-at-once snack box that lasts 2 kids × 2 days. Ep. 8 of the Split Plate Snack Box series — returns to shelf-stable proteins (deli turkey) after Ep. 7's cooked-fajita-chicken exception. Wider cold-chain tolerance than Ep. 7 (deli turkey holds better than cooked chicken). Assembles like a lunchable but eats like a real deli plate.

First compartment: 2.5 oz deli turkey per box (or 3 oz for hungrier kids). Any oven-roasted deli turkey works — Hillshire Farm Premium Carved shown, but brand-neutral by default. Second: 1 Colby Jack cheese stick, cubed uniformly. Third: 3-4 petite dill pickles (Mt. Olive Kosher Dill Petites shown) — the flavor identity moment; kids either love this or reject it, which is where the caption engagement comes from. Fourth: 0.75 oz pretzel crisps (Snack Factory Original shown) in the DRY compartment — separated from pickle moisture so they don't soften. Reads classic deli plate scaled for kids.

FOUR-BOX BATCH (recommended)
Method
- 1SET UP
Set out four divided snack boxes (4-compartment Bento-style — same format as Snack Box Series Ep. 1-7). Deli turkey is shelf-stable pre-open; no cooking needed. Ep. 8 returns to shelf-stable proteins after Ep. 7's cooked-fajita-chicken exception.
- 2TURKEY
Divide 10 oz deli turkey into 4 boxes — 2.5 oz per box. Any oven-roasted deli turkey works (Hillshire Farm Premium Carved shown; brand-neutral by default). For hungrier kids or adult mini-meal, bump to 3 oz per box (12 oz total).
- 3COLBY JACK
Cube one Colby Jack cheese stick per box and add to the second compartment. Cube size = 1/2-inch or smaller for young kids. Colby Jack is milder than sharp cheddar — kid-friendly by default. Uniform cube size = no compartment ends up with awkward pieces.
- 4PICKLES
Add 3-4 petite dill pickles per box to the third compartment (Mt. Olive Kosher Dill Petites shown). This is the flavor-identity moment — kids either love it or reject it, which is the caption's engagement hook. For under-4s, slice petites lengthwise to reduce choking risk; over 4s handle whole petites fine with supervision.
- 5PRETZELS
Add 0.75 oz pretzel crisps (Snack Factory Original shown) to the DRY compartment — critical to keep pretzels away from pickle moisture, else they soften in the sealed box within hours. Pretzel crisps are flat and thin so they hold better than round hard pretzels, but still separate compartments.
- 6LID + CHILL
Snap lids on and refrigerate immediately. Assembled boxes hold up to 3 days for the turkey + cheese (deli turkey has wider cold-chain tolerance than Ep. 7's cooked chicken). Pretzels stay crunchy for 2-3 days if separated from pickle moisture in the box. For lunchboxes, pack with an ice pack.
Adult plate | Kid plate
Adult
Adult-friendly batch too — steal a box from the meal-prep stack. ~250 cal / 20g protein reads as a clean parent snack. Deli turkey is the shelf-stable protein anchor, easier to pack than Ep. 7's cooked chicken. Adults can bump turkey to 3 oz per box (~275 cal / 24g protein) if snack-as-mini-meal.
Kid
SAFETY: Whole petite pickles + firm cheese cubes are texture-appropriate for most kids but under 4s should have pickles sliced lengthwise (not left whole) and cheese cubed small (1/2-inch or less). Pretzel crisps are flat and thin — lower choking risk than round hard pretzels, but still watch for kids who don't chew thoroughly. Per CDC + AAP choking-prevention guidance. Kids can help place components — turns snack prep into low-pressure participation. Not school-safe by default: some schools restrict pretzel wheat/gluten; check the school's allergen and formulation rules before packing outside the home.
Three keys to success
- 1PRETZELS GO IN THE DRY COMPARTMENT — separated from pickle moisture. Pretzel + pickle contact = soft mush within hours. This is Ep. 8's most texture-critical rule.
- 2Cube Colby Jack uniformly — 1/2-inch or smaller for young kids. Uniform cube size = no compartment ends up with awkwardly-sized pieces.
- 3Slice petite pickles lengthwise for kids under 4 (whole petites are choking-appropriate for over-4s with supervision). Per CDC + AAP choking-prevention guidance.

Storage and nutrition
Storage: Assemble the 4 boxes in one 10-minute pass. Refrigerate immediately. Assembled boxes hold up to 3 days — longest of the snack box series thanks to shelf-stable deli turkey (Ep. 7 caps at 2 days because of cooked chicken). Pretzels stay crunchy for 2-3 days if kept in the dry compartment. For lunchboxes, pack with an ice pack.
Reheat: Don't reheat the assembled box (cheese sweats, pickles taste off warm). Serve chilled by default — that's the whole snack-box format. For adult mini-meal use, warm the turkey portion briefly if desired, but repack after cooling.
Lasts: 3 days max in the fridge — the pretzel crunch is the first thing to degrade after that, followed by pickle-to-pretzel moisture migration. Deli turkey shelf life is 3-5 days from opening but the assembled box caps at 3 for pretzel texture. Adding pretzels closer to serving extends the crunch window.
