Split Plate Mediterranean Snack Box
Mediterranean-inspired kid snack box — prosciutto, Babybel, Castelvetrano olives, and almond-flour crackers. 4 boxes at once for 2 kids across 2 days. About 270 cal / 16g protein per box.
You want a no-cook 4-box batch that lasts 2 kids × 2 days. Also useful when introducing kids to less-familiar foods — the kid-participation moment (letting them place olives + crackers) turns exposure into low-pressure play. Ep. 5 of the Split Plate Snack Box series.

First compartment: rolled prosciutto ribbons — the salty protein anchor. Second: wax-wrapped Babybel wedge — kid opens their own. Third: green briny Castelvetrano olives — the Mediterranean identity + the food-exposure moment. Fourth: dry almond-flour crackers for the crunch. Reads like a mini charcuterie board scaled for kids.
Ingredients
PER BOX (yields 1 snack box)
FOUR-BOX BATCH (recommended)
Method
- 1SET UP
Set out four divided snack boxes (4-compartment Bento-style — same format as Snack Box Series Ep. 1-4).
- 2PROSCIUTTO
Fold 2 oz prosciutto LOOSELY into one compartment of each box. Loose folds hold up better than tight rolls (less compression, more visual air).
- 3BABYBEL
Drop one wrapped Original Babybel into the cheese compartment of each box. Keep the wax on — kids open their own, and the wax-peel ritual is part of the appeal.
- 4OLIVES
Drain the Castelvetrano olives WELL (wet olives soak into other compartments). Divide 1.5 servings into the olive compartment of each box. FOR KIDS UNDER 4 — quarter lengthwise (see notes). Over 4 with good chewing = whole is fine but supervise.
- 5CRACKERS
Add 0.5 serving Simple Mills almond-flour crackers to the DRY compartment of each box. Keep them dry — moisture from olives / prosciutto softens them.
- 6
KIDS HELP BUILD (optional but recommended): Let kids place the olives + crackers themselves. Turns exposure into low-pressure play. Doesn't guarantee they'll eat — just makes the food feel less unfamiliar.
- 7LID + CHILL
Snap lid on each box. Refrigerate — prosciutto + cheese need it. For lunchboxes, pack with an ice pack. Serve chilled.

Adult
Adult-friendly batch too — steal a box from the meal-prep stack. Prosciutto + olives + Babybel hits an adult snack cleanly at ~270 cal / 16g protein.
Kid
SAFETY: Castelvetrano olives are round + slippery. Under 4 = quarter lengthwise. Over 4 with good chewing = whole is fine but supervise the first few bites. Per CDC choking-hazard guidance for spherical foods. Also: kids helping place the olives + crackers turns unfamiliar-food exposure into low-pressure play — but don't oversell the trick (helping doesn't guarantee eating).
Three keys to success
- 1Drain the olives WELL before boxing. Wet olives soak into prosciutto + crackers = compartment cross-contamination.
- 2Keep the cracker compartment DRY. Add crackers shortly before serving OR seal the lid tightly so olive brine + prosciutto moisture stay put.
- 3Loose prosciutto folds > tight rolls. Loose = better visual + easier to grab. Tight = compressed + harder to pull out.

Storage and nutrition
Storage: Assemble the 4 boxes in one 5-minute pass. Refrigerate immediately — prosciutto + Babybel need it. Best within 2 days.
Reheat: Don't — serve chilled. Prosciutto reads best cold; Babybel firms up in the fridge.
Lasts: 2 days max in the fridge. Crackers soften after 24 hours even in the sealed compartment — add them shortly before serving if packing more than a day ahead.
